Right now, orchards across Northern and Central California are in the middle of walnut harvest. The California Walnut Board says harvest runs from the first weeks of September to the beginning of November, and the region grows 99% of the U.S. walnut crop. It’s a good reminder that October is a natural time to change what’s in the break room.
A seasonal rotation keeps snacks interesting without overhauling your whole program. Here are the fall snacks and drinks worth adding this month, and how to work them into vending, micro markets and pantry service.
Pumpkin and apple flavors
Pumpkin and apple are the flavors people expect in October, and they show up across nearly every snack category. Good options to rotate in include:
- Roasted pumpkin seeds, salted or spiced
- Apple chips and dried apple rings
- Cinnamon or maple granola and granola bars
- Pumpkin spice or apple cinnamon breakfast bars
- Fresh apples in a fruit bowl or cooler
These work best as a limited run. Bring a few in at the start of October, watch what sells, and phase them out after Thanksgiving so they stay special.
Warm drinks for cooler mornings
When the weather turns, cold drinks slow down and hot ones pick up. Make room for:
- Chai and spiced black teas
- Hot cocoa packets
- Apple cider drink mixes
- Seasonal coffee flavors and creamers
If you have a bean-to-cup brewer, fall is a good time to feature seasonal drinks. Our post on fall flavors and bean-to-cup coffee covers the brewing side.
Heartier protein snacks
Fall schedules get busy, and lighter summer snacks don’t always hold people until lunch. Protein-forward options help. In the 2025 IFIC Food & Health Survey, 71% of Americans said they were trying to consume protein, up from 59% in 2022.
There’s a gap, though. The same IFIC research found that only 17% prioritize protein when choosing snacks. That’s an opportunity for the break room. Put protein options where people already look, and they’re more likely to grab them:
- Jerky and meat sticks
- Nut packs and trail mix
- Cheese and cracker packs
- Protein bars and shakes
- Hard-boiled eggs and Greek yogurt in the cooler
Better-for-you fall snacks
Fall snacks don’t all need to be sweet. Nuts are an easy seasonal tie-in, especially with California walnuts coming in now. Under the FDA’s updated "healthy" claim rules, nutrient-dense foods such as nuts and seeds, with no added ingredients except water, automatically qualify for the "healthy" claim.
Other better-for-you picks for October include plain or lightly salted nuts, roasted chickpeas, fruit cups, whole grain crackers and dark chocolate in small portions. Pair them with sparkling water or unsweetened tea for a lighter option next to the seasonal treats.
Keep the favorites in place
A seasonal rotation works best when it adds to what people already like. If your team counts on a certain chip, candy bar or energy drink, keep it. Fall items should take over a few slots or one shelf, not the whole lineup.
It also helps to tell people what’s new. A small sign by the machine or a note in the team chat that pumpkin seeds and cider just arrived gets more people to try them, and gives you faster feedback on what to keep.
How to rotate fall snacks through vending, micro markets and pantry
Each format handles a seasonal rotation a little differently.
Vending machines
Swap a few slots instead of the whole machine. Keep the top sellers in place and dedicate one row to fall items. PVS vending machines report sales in real time, so we can see which seasonal items move and adjust the planogram on the next visit.
Micro markets
Micro markets have the most room to play. A seasonal shelf near the kiosk or a fall section in the cooler gets noticed. PVS micro markets use a cloud-based system that tracks every purchase, which makes it easy to tell what’s working before the season ends.
Office pantry
With office pantry service, you choose what your company provides for free. Add a fall bin or two to the bulk dispensers, put out cider and cocoa by the hot water, and ask your team what they want next month.
