Office Holiday Party Ideas: Food, Drinks and Break Room Prep for Northern California Teams

In its most recent holiday party survey, Challenger, Gray & Christmas found that 64% of companies planned holiday celebrations in 2024, the same share as the year before. It also found that 17% planned to cut party spending, up from 8% in 2023.

That combination points to a practical answer: hold the party at the office. The office holiday party ideas below use the break room you already have, and late October is the right time to start planning them.

Why October is the planning window

Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, and December calendars fill quickly after that. Picking a date now gives you time to check who will be in the office, line up food and drinks, and give your refreshment provider enough notice to stock up.

If your team is hybrid, schedule the party on a day most people are already on site. A daytime celebration during work hours also makes it easier for people with long commutes from Sacramento, the Central Valley or across the bridges to join without staying late.

Office holiday party ideas for the break room

Build a coffee and cocoa bar

A hot drink station is easy to set up and gets a lot of use in December. A bean-to-cup brewer makes espresso, cappuccinos and lattes on demand, and single-cup brewers offer flavors like Dove chocolate and vanilla hazelnut. A filtered water dispenser with hot water on tap makes tea and cocoa packets simple. Set out cinnamon, peppermint sticks and whipped cream, and let people build their own.

Tea deserves a spot too. Stock a few popular brands, including caffeine-free options for the afternoon.

Put cold brew and kombucha on tap

Not everyone wants a hot drink, especially in a warm office. PVS offers Wandering Bear cold brew and kombucha on tap. The cold brew comes in flavors like Vanilla as well as Black and Decaf, and the kombucha is a lightly fizzy, low-sugar option that feels festive in a glass. A Bevi machine adds still or sparkling water with zero- or low-calorie flavors.

Set out a snack spread that covers everyone

Mix sweet and savory, and include options for different diets. Our pantry service can stock healthy snacks, fresh food and bulk dispensers for nuts, seeds and cereal. For dessert, a ColdSnap machine makes ice cream, protein shakes and frozen lattes from shelf-stable pods in about two minutes.

Keep products in their original packaging when you can so people can read the ingredient labels, and mark anything homemade.

Make non-alcoholic drinks a real part of the menu

A growing number of employees don’t drink. Gallup reported in August 2026 that the share of U.S. adults who drink alcohol held at a record-low 54% for the second year in a row. An in-office party with alcohol-free drinks as the main event avoids leaving anyone out.

Treat those drinks with the same care you’d give a cocktail menu. Sparkling water with fruit, kombucha in a nice glass and cold brew over ice all feel like a choice rather than a fallback.

Plan for hybrid and remote teammates

A few simple steps help people who can’t be there feel included:

  • Announce the date early so hybrid employees can plan an office day around it.
  • Keep the core of the party short and during work hours.
  • Run one activity, like a gift swap or a trivia round, that remote employees can join on video.
  • Leave extra wrapped snacks in the break room for people who come in later in the week.

Prep the break room before the party

A little prep keeps the day from turning into a scramble:

  1. Give your refreshment provider your date and headcount a couple of weeks ahead.
  2. Schedule a restock a few days before the party.
  3. Order extra cups, napkins, stir sticks, creamers and sweeteners.
  4. Clean out the fridge and clear counter space for food.
  5. Add extra trash and recycling bins for the day.
